Hitting the US for the first time is the BMW 840i Gran Coupe, which uses BMW’s venerated TwinPower 3.0 liter inline-6 Turbo engine. It makes 335 hp and 668 lb-ft of torque, good for a 0-60 of 4.9 seconds. With optionally xDrive, the 840i will hit that mark in 4.6 seconds. The 8 Series also features the TwinPower 4.4 liter V8 Turbo engine from its Coupe counterpart in M850i xDrive guise. This engine makes 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque for a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds.
The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe has the latest head-up display that adds additional content and optimized graphics. This makes it easy to see the projected information without diverting eyes from the road. The BMW infotainment and driving system includes the latest version of iDrive, providing better interaction and control options for users. BMW Connected supports intelligent connectivity for easy, stress-free navigation. Drivers can connect to the app from within the car or using their mobile devices to enjoy more convenience.
Intelligent Personal Assistant
Standard specification for the new BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent digital helper who responds to the prompt “Hey BMW” and is an intrinsic element of the operating system. The BMW Group is set to revolutionize driving pleasure with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and, in so doing, enters a new era in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car and access its functions and information simply by speaking. The range of functions and skills available will be constantly expanded as part of updates, which can be carried out seamlessly on a smartphone and in-car by Remote Software Upgrade.
Like the coupe and convertible, the Gran Coup’s interior is lavishly outfitted—albeit sedately styled—and features a digital gauge display, touchscreen infotainment with navigation, ambient interior lighting such as the white 912 led bulb for map light, and soft leather upholstery. Legroom is more generous in the rear seat of the Gran Coupe than it is in the other models but, thanks to the car’s sharply angled roofline, headroom will be tight. The 8-series Gran Coupe goes on sale this fall with a starting price of around $85,000 for the 840i with M850i models starting in the low six-figures.
In the 840i xDrive and M850i xDrive Gran Coupe models, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system features rapid, precise and fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels, maximizing traction and handling stability not just when driving in adverse road conditions, but in performance driving situations as well. Power is split in accordance with demands at all times using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch that is networked with the powertrain and chassis systems.
BMW will offer the 8-Series Gran Coupe in two distinct flavors. The entry-level 840i Gran Coupe starts at $85,895 (all prices include destination charges). BMW’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine powers the rear wheels, making 335 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. The 840i xDrive Gran Coupe, which offers all-wheel-drive, starts at $88,795.
