BMW is celebrating all things M-Division with a new, limited-edition, M4. The latest example to date of a fascinating combination of performance and exclusiveness is the BMW M4 Convertible Edition 30 Jahre. This open-top high-performance sports car was produced in a limited edition of 300 and presented in 2020 – three decades after the premiere of the first-generation BMW M4 M Heritage. This edition model also featured exclusive paint finishes – namely Macao Blue metallic and Mandarin II uni – and specific interior design, providing for unique and aesthetic driving pleasure both on country roads and on the racetrack.
Performance Division Color
The familiar color combination of the BMW M performance division – light blue, dark blue and red – is featured throughout. There’s a choice of three body colors (Laguna Seca Blue, Velvet Blue metallic and Imola Red), while the carbon-fiber reinforced-plastic roof incorporates a decorative strip in the M colors, integrated into the composite at the factory. Whether or not BMW comes up with a price point that makes the M Heritage a good value is largely irrelevant, however. The vehicle’s rarity will automatically position it as a collectible car, something the manufacturer was keen to note. With the next-generation of the 4 Series expected to debut, at least in concept form, next month, the M Heritage is also likely to be viewed as a send-off for the current model.
Engine Features
The M Heritage edition is based on the M4 M Heritage equipped with the optional Competition Package, led car lights upgrade package, so its 3.0-liter straight-six engine is turbocharged to deliver 444 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, and 406 pound-feet of torque between 2,350 and 5,500 pm. Rear-wheel drive is the only configuration offered, but BMW lets buyers choose between a six-speed manual transmission and a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic controlled via shift paddles. The M4 takes 3.8 seconds to reach 60 mph from a stop in its quickest, two-pedal configuration.
Types of M4

Based on another special edition, the M4 DTM, the M Heritage Edition features several styling differences to the regular M4. Three paint shades are offered – Imola Red, Laguna Seca Blue and Velvet Blue metallic – which mirror the colored stripes of the BMWM4 M Heritage logo. The carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic roof gets subtle stripes in these colors and is joined by 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels in matt grey.
CFRP Design
Furthermore, the two-seater’s carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof boasts a striking decorative strip in the BMW M colors, which is integrated into the CFRP composite at the factory using a special manufacturing process. Likewise unique are the forged, 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in a star spoke design finished in Orbit Grey matt and fitted with mixed tires.
Exterior color options spill over into interior designs. Silverstone (light gray) and black leather with turquoise stitching will accompany M4s painted in Laguna Seca Blue, while a darker blue contrast stitching will be used for cars with a Velvet Blue exterior. The interior car light features 6000K white t10 led bulb, which accompanies black leather and looks great. Meanwhile, Imola Red vehicles will receive red and black leather with red stitching. All cars will feature Merino leather M Sport seats and plated door sills indicating the car’s special edition status and production number.
